Watch! Quinton De Kock shows his frustrations with DRS calls as Fans react on Twitter

Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Stadium was the venue as India and South Africa began their short 3 match ODI series. The match was reduced to a delayed start as the rain played spoilsport early. The game was reduced to 40 over per side encounter and South Africa ran out winners by 9 runs. Sanju Samson was the star of the show for India with a valiant knock of 86.

Quinton De Kock cuts a frustrated figure –

South African bowlers had done well to restrict India early on in the innings with runs coming at snail’s pace. The Indian team began to pick up their momentum post the arrival of Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson. Tabriz Shamsi twice struck the Indian team on the pads. Quinton De Kock wasn’t convinced both the times, yet Temba Bavuma went up for the DRS call. Both the times the call out not out as the ball was missing the stumps.

South Africa’s DRS mistakes cost them a wicket -

The 3rd time Shamsi spun one in sharply to hit the pads of Shardul Thakur. The bowler went up with a huge appeal only for the umpire to turn it down. Once the replays were played it was clear that the ball was hitting the stumps. Had the DRS been retained, South Africa could have had the wicket of Thakur. The cameras then panned to Quinton De Kock who had his hands on his head, showing his frustrations with the decisions taken on the field.

India won the toss and chose to bowl first on a wicket with moisture due to the rain. Janneman Malan and De Kock put on 49 for the 1st wicket. Malan was out for 22 caught by Iyer of Thakur. Bavuma was bowled by Thakur for 8, while Markram was bowled by Yadav for a duck.

De Kock fell 2 runs short of his 50 when he was out LBW to Ravi Bishnoi. Heinrich Klassen and David Miller then added 139 runs in 106 balls to take South Africa to 249. Klassen scored 74* off 65 balls with 8 fours and 2 sixes, while Miller scored 75* off 63 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes. There were several dropped catches and misfields which cost India dear. 

India left in early spot of bother –

Chasing 250 to win from 40 overs, India lost the wickets of Shubman Gill for 3 and captain Shikhar Dhawan for 4. Both bowled by Rabada and Parnell respectively. Debutant Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan then added 40 but the pace of scoring was low. Gaikwad was out for 19 stumped off Shami, Gaikwad scored his runs from 42 balls. Kishan was out for 20 when he was caught by Malan at leg slip off Maharaj to leave India at 51 for 4 still needing 199 runs from 134 balls. 

Iyer and Samson lead the fightback –

Shreyas Iyer came out all guns blazing as the Indian vice-captain scored an enterpring half century. This was his 5th half century in a row in ODI cricket. Iyer scored 50 off 37 balls with 6 fours and added 67 for the 5th wicket in just 9 overs. Iyer was eventually dismissed by Ngidi while trying to go over the top and was caught by Rabada.

 Samson and Thakur fight hard as India fail to chase down the target –

Shardul Thakur and Sanju Samson then joined forces and went after the South African bowling. The duo 93 runs in 65 balls as both the batters put away the bad balls and played some innovative shots. Thakur was looking good on 33 when he fell to Ngidi caught by Maharaj. Despite the late efforts of Samson, India fell short by 9 runs. Samson was not out on 86 off 63 balls with 9 fours and 3 sixes.
