Five potential captains for the next edition of IPL in 2022
Indian Premier League 2021 edition saw suspension mid-season after the spurt of COVID cases increased during the course of the tournament. One of the biggest challenges during an IPL season falls on the shoulder of the captain of an IPL side is to keep the momentum of the team and also make sure that they keep winning. When we speak of the great IPL captains we tend to speak about Rohit Sharma with 5 titles and MS Dhoni with 3 titles while players like David Warner and Adam Gilchrist have all led their sides to IPL title wins. In this list we look at the five possible candidates to lead an IPL team in case they are released by their current teams.
Steve Smith – Current team Delhi Capitals
The former Australian skipper has been in the news with the possibility of him being handed the test captaincy again for his country. In the IPL he captained the Rising Pune Supergiants to the finals in 2017 while his record for RR hasn’t been much home to write about in case of a release the other franchisees could be looking at Smith as an option.
David Warner – Current Team Sunrisers Hyderabad
David Warner was a broken man when he was stripped of his captaincy by Sunrisers Hyderabad and if he happens to get released he could go to a franchise like Rajasthan Royals or Punjab Kjngs to make them a formidable outfit with his cricketing smartness and passion he brings to the team.
Prithvi Shaw – Current team Delhi Capitals
The 21 year old from Mumbai has been in hot form for his IPL side Delhi Capitals with over 300 runs, as a leader Shaw has the right pedigree with an under-19 world cup win and a Vijay Hazare Trophy under his belt for Mumbai.
Shubman Gill – Current team Kolkata Knight Riders
Considered one of the top talents in the country and known for his eye pleasing batting the 21 year old from Punjab could be roped in as the skipper for the cool head he displays and also his ability to bat his team to victory could come in handy as a potential captaincy candidate.
Suryakumar Yadav – Current team Mumbai Indians
The 30 year old Mumbai Indians batsman is the key for Rohit Sharma and his men and has helped them to two back to back IPL titles in 2019 and 2020. If released by Mumbai he could perhaps head to a different franchise and help mould that team into a regular championship contender.
