Dinesh Karthik is a modern day marvel when we speak about Indian cricket. Karthik who turns 37 on 1st June, has made it back to the Indian team for the T20 series against South Africa. DK as he is fondly called has had a great TATA IPL 2022 for Royal Challengers Bangalore, thus earning him a recall 3 years after playing for the men in blue. Once the expected recall came, the Social Media was abuzz for DK to don the Indian jersey again.
Rohit Sharma’s year old chat goes viral –
Rohit Sharma took over the Indian captaincy towards the end of 2021 and became the all format captain early this year.. The chat in question happened in 2021 when India were touring England. The Indian team had played the World Test Championship final and a 4 match test series against England (1 match remains to be played this year). Sharma had a chat with Dinesh Karthik on Instagram when Karthik was in England as a commentator. DK had written about the dress that he was supposed to wear, to which Rohit Sharma said “You still have some cricket left FYI!!!”. Karthik had replied to it and said “Don’t ever doubt that Sham”
Season to remember for DK –
Dinesh Karthik was released by KKR at the end of the 2021 season, a franchise he had led for a period of time. Karthik was picked by RCB, a franchise for whom he had played way back in 2014, before moving to Gujarat Lions. RCB have Dinesh Karthik to thank for making the play offs. The veteran stumper has scored 281 runs with a strike rate of above 191. He has been playing the role of a finisher for the men from Bangalore.
Can DK deliver for India?
Dinesh Karthik will be expected to slot into the Indian XI for the first T20 game against South Africa on June 9. He will be expected to pip Ishan Kishan who has been out of touch with the bat. DK who has shown his ability to play the 360 degree cricket will be expected to shore up the middle order and play the finisher. This is the role that India have been missing ever since the retirement of MS Dhoni. This could perhaps be the last Hurrah for Dinesh Karthik who made his debut way back in 2004. He could very well be part of the T20 world cup in Australia and also the 50 over world cup next year in 2023. A final run with the Indian and a successful one at that could very well give DK the highlight of his career before he hangs up his boots for good.
