Indian Cricket: Gautam Gambhir’s name as captaincy candidate will surprise you

Team India had a rather disappointing end to their ICC T20 World Cup campaign. The men in blue lost by ten wickets to the eventual champions England in the semi finals of the tournament. This after the brilliant start to the tournament and winning 4 out of the 5 games during the Super 12 stages of the tournament.

Post the heavy defeat, Rohit Sharma has come under fire for his lack of leadership from the fans. The BCCI is also keen to appoint a new skipper for the T20 side and one of the front runners is none other than all- rounder Hardik Pandya.

The story as it happened –

Gautam Gambhir is known to be a person who doesn’t mince his words. The former Indian opener played a key role in both the finals triumph on 2007 and 2011 with the bat. The 41 year old came up with a different name to captain the T20 side which may shock the fans.

Gautam Gambhir wants to see Prithvi Shaw as the captain –

Former India opener and twice IPL winning skipper Gautam Gambhir has named Prithvi Shaw as a future potential India skipper. Gambhir, while speaking to a gathering at a function recently named the 23 year old as a cricketer with good brain.

Shaw who has been ignored despite his good performances with the bat, has won the under -19 world cup with India in 2018. Gambhir said “he can be a successful captain as he (Shaw) has an attacking instinct. Even though everyone talks about his off the field activities lot more. It is the job of the selectors and the coach to mend the ways of the player and bring about the discipline. The selectors have to take a closer look at this. His attacking nature of play will also reflect on his captaincy”.

Shaw’s stellar captaincy record –

Prithvi Shaw made his test debut with a dream and breezy century versus West Indies in 2018. The 23 year old hasn’t played a game for India since the pink ball test against Australia in 2020.

Shaw led the Mumbai team to the final of the Ranji trophy earlier this year, where they lost to MP in the final. One of the most striking aspects of Shaw’s captaincy was the way team played.

Mumbai had the best run rate in the 4 day matches and played aggressive cricket with Shaw leading the way with the bat. Despite losing the final, the Mumbai team during the game did not take their foot off the pedal looking for a win.
