Indian Cricket: Identity of Rohit Sharma’s likely replacement for Bangladesh tests leaves fans unimpressed

J

India on Wednesday lost the 2nd ODI to Bangladesh by mere 5 runs as they also lost the series by 2-0 margin. This meant that Bangladesh kept their record run of home series wins in a bilateral series for the last 7 years alive.

The loss for India came at the cost of 3 players getting injured with the notable name of Rohit Sharma. The Indian captain injured his thumb during the 2nd ODI and came out to bat at number 9. Rohit, nearly won the game for India with a brisk 50 while batting with an injury.

The story as it happened –

Indian coach Rahul Dravid has confirmed that Rohit Sharma is flying back to Mumbai to seek medical consultation. The 35 year old is slated to miss the now inconsequential 3rd ODI to be played on Saturday. Rohit’s participation for the 2 match test series is also under doubt.

Shubman Gill likely to open for India-

With Rohit now under the cloud, it is assumed that Shubman Gill will open the innings for India alongside KL Rahul. The 23 year old last played test match in early July during the tour of England.

Noted cricket enthusiast CricCrazyJohns took to Twitter and wrote “Gill and Rahul to open for India in tests if Rohit Sharma is unavailable”

KL Rahul to captain the side –

In case Rohit is ruled out of the test series, then it is expected that KL Rahul will be the captain of the side. Rahul was the skipper earlier this year during the Johannesburg test when Virat Kohli wasn’t able to take the field due to back issues.

Mohammad Shami to be replaced by Mukesh Kumar or Umran Malik –

The injury news gets worse as Mohammad Shami is still not fit. The 32 year old could be replaced by either tearaway speedster Umran Malik or Bengal seamer Mukesh Kumar. The 29 year old Kumar is in Bangladesh part of the India A team setup, while Malik is part of the ODI team.

Saurabh Kumar likely to be added to the test team –

With Axar Patel also having fitness concerns, and the loss of Jadeja the Indian team management will be keen to add 29 year old left arm spinner Saurabh Kumar. The spinning all rounder has been in good form for India A during the Bangladesh series. He has not only picked wickets but also scored important runs with the bat.

Fans left upset on Twitter –

Once it came to be known that Gill and Rahul could open the batting the Indian fans weren’t pleased as they took to Twitter to have their say. You can read all the tweets from fans below.
