Day 4 of the 1st test between Sri Lanka and Pakistan ended with Pakistan at 222 of 3. The visiting side need 120 runs more to win the 1st test, while the home team need 7 wickets. It was an great display of rear guard action as Abdullah Shafique struck a century to lead the chase for the men in green on a track which has been historically known to aid the spinners. The talking point of the day though was the fall of Imam Ul Haq and his lazy approach.

The story as it happened โ€“

Chasing 342 to win, Pakistan began with Imam Ul Haq and Abdullah Shafique mixing caution with aggression. The duo were circumspect against the bowlers, but did not miss any chance to put the bad balls away. The pair had managed to add 87 for the first wicket when tragedy struck. Ramesh Mendis bowled the 5th ball of the 29th over and it turned away sharply. Thatโ€™s when wicket keeper Dickwella let rip a huge appeal and the leg umpire sent it upstairs. It was seen that Imam Ul Haq had carelessly strode out of his crease and was out stumped for 35.

Shafique lead the chase โ€“

Post the wicket of Imam Ul Haq, Pakistan lost another wicket in former skipper Azhar Ali for 6. Ali was dismissed by Jayasuriya caught by Dhananjaya De Silva before Babar Azam and Shafique added 101 runs for the 3rd wicket. The Pakistan skipper scored 55 off 104 balls with 4 fours and a six.  Jayasuriya towards the fag end of the day had Azam bowled. Shafique got to his century and was not out on 112 from 289 balls with 5 fours and a six, while Mohammad Rizwan was not out on 7. Pakistan need 120 runs more with 7 wickets in hand but have a larger tail to contend with and skipper Azam back in the hut.
