IPL 2023: Twitter reacts to Vijay Shankar’s hattrick of sixes against Shardul Thakur

Gujarat Titans the defending TATA IPL champions took on Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday. Both the teams came into the game on the back of varied run of results. Gujarat Titans were so far unbeaten in the tournament winning both their games. Kolkata Knight Riders meanwhile, came into the game after beating Royal Challengers Bangalore by 81 runs in their previous game. The two time champs had lost their first game of the season to Punjab Kings.

The story as it happened –

Gujarat Titans won the toss and chose to field as Hardik Pandya missed the game due to illness. Rashid Khan was named as the captain as the 29 year old Pandya was replaced by Vijay Shankar. The 32 year old from Tamil Nadu was dropped for the last game.

Vijay Shankar hits Shardul Thakur for back to back sixes –

32 year old Vijay Shankar last played for India during the 2019 World Cup in the game against West Indies. During the final over of the Gujarat Titans innings, Vijay Shankar decided to flex his arms and go hammer and tongs at Shardul Thakur.

The 3rd ball of the 20th over saw Shankar hit Thakur hit over the deep mid wicket for a big six. This got him his half century in just 21 balls, the 4th ball saw yet another six this time in the same region as the previous delivery. The 5th ball of the over went for 3rd six of the over.

Forgettable day with the ball for Thakur –

Shardul Thakur was the player who turned the game around for Kolkata Knight Riders in their last game against Royal Challengers Bangalore. The 31 year old scored a quickfire half century to just when the two times champs were in trouble. Thakur had also taken a wicket to play a key role in the win. It was a different result on Sunday as Thakur was hit for 40 runs from 3 wicketless overs.

Career best score for Shankar –

Speaking of Vijay Shankar the 32 year old scored 63 unbeaten runs 24 balls with 4 fours and 5 huge sixes. The 63 not out was his best score in the TATA IPL and also his 4th half century. Shankar and his Tamil Nadu team mate Sai Sudarshan with 53 helped Gujarat Titans reach 204.
