There are few cricketers in India who have some unique names, Napoleon Einstein comes to mind with names of a well known war general and a Nobel prize winning figure or be it Sachin Baby who was named after the Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar or be it the latest domestic T-20 sensations Mohammad Azharudeen and Shah Rukh Khan while the free spirited batsman from Kerala is named after Former Indian captain the 25 year old Chennai all rounder is named after the well known Bollywood superstar. One of the most unique names to grace the Indian cricket is 21 year old Washington Sundar from Chennai who has taken the world by storm.

Washington Sundar who made an impressive debut during the fourth test at Brisbane and played a huge role in the Indian win is the son of former Tamil Nadu fringe player M. Sundar. When asked why he named his son Washington the man said the inspiration came from an army veteran PD Washington who had helped M. Sundar during testing times. M. Sundar said “I am a Hindu and come from a very humble family. Two streets away from my home in Triplicane lived an ex-army man called PD Washington. Washington was extremely fond of cricket and would come to watch us play at the Marina ground. He took a liking for my game, As per the Hindu custom, I whispered a God’s name, ‘Srinivasan,’ in his ear. But I decided to name him Washington in memory of the man who had done so much for me

Drafted into the Indian side post the injury to Ashwin the tall 21 year old made a great start when he dismissed Steve Smith to set his test career rolling. The left hander also scored a 50 in the first innings and also forged a crucial stand with Shardul Thakur to bring India back into the contest. Washington scored quick runs in the second innings along with Pant to guide India to a three wicket win at Brisbane. His next test match came at home in Chennai where he went wicket less with ball but scored an impressive and eye catching 85 to give India some respectability in the first innings.
