Cricketers in today’s world are always being looked at with microscopic lens and scrutinized for their every move and every action with so much of coverage of their on-field and off-field activities and with the advent of the social media the cricketers every word is looked at by both the fans and the powers to be. On few occasions though cricketers can display their humane side and display their frustrations on the social media which can land them in the hot water and in this list we look at five occasions when cricketers had to face consequences for their social media activities.

Emily Smith – Australia

Australian women’s cricketer Emily Smith was in the docks for her social media post  after she had posted the playing 11 for her BBL team Hobart Hurricanes which was supposed to play later that day. This earned her a ban for a year, the ban was later turned to 2 months. Cricket Australia too posted a statement which said “Whilst Cricket Australia acknowledges that at the time of posting the team line-up there was no intent to breach the Anti-Corruption Code, CA’s rigorous anti-corruption player education program means that players are well aware of their obligations under the Anti-Corruption Code and there is no excuse for breaches regardless of the reasons for information being disclosed”

Suryakumar Yadav – India

The latest batting sensation to take India by storm is 30 year Suryakumar Yadav but before he could make his Indian journey he was in the eye of the storm for his few social media posts, one of which was in the year 2017 when Yadav’s name was kept in the reserve for selection after he had retweeted a tweet which read “You are dropped? Looks like Bombay selectors are unaware that you are the Vice Capt of IPL champion team KKR “

The left handed opening batsman from England courted controversy during the recent tour of India after England lost the third test match at Ahmedabad inside two days. This prompted Alex Hartley to tweet “Nice of the England boys to get this test match finished just before England Women play tonight” while Rory burns replied with ‘Very disappointing attitude considering all the boys do to support the Women’s game’even Ben Stokes and James Anderson  and even coach Chris Silverwood opined “It’s not for me to judge on that one. That will be dealt with back in England, obviously. For me, I don’t worry about things like that. I’ve got more on my plate this end to worry about. That’s what I’ll be encouraging the boys to do as well: keep their head in what’s happening here.

Kevin Pietersen – England

Kevin Pietersen had a few off the field issues while he was playing for England and after the Ashes 2013 tour he was dropped from the English team for good. KP took to twitter and wrote “It’s not for me to judge on that one. That will be dealt with back in England, obviously. For me, I don’t worry about things like that. I’ve got more on my plate this end to worry about. That’s what I’ll be encouraging the boys to do as well: keep their head in what’s happening here.

Darren Bravo – West Indies

Before a 2016 tour to Zimbabwe Bravo was put on the flight back home when he tweeted his displeasure about his contract being questioned with the form he was showing with the bat “You have been failing 4 d last 4yrs. Y don’t u resign and FYI I’ve neva been given an A contract. Big idiot @davec51. Bravo was dropped from the side and WICB released a statement which read “due to inappropriate and unacceptable behaviour which is contrary to his contractual obligations to the WICB”.
