Indian selectors set to take a huge call on T20I captaincy post the NZ series

The fallout from the big loss in the semi finals of the ICC 2022 T20 World Cup is set to begin. The Indian team were bundled out of the World Cup in the semi final stages on Thursday. The English team led by Jos Buttler chased down the 169 run target in 16 over with all ten wickets in hand.

Post the huge defeat there is concerns in the power corridor of the BCCI. There is set to be sweeping changes if the reports are to be believed. The changes will come right at the top and could involve Rohit Sharma the Indian captain.

The story as it happened –

Indian captain, Rohit Sharma cut a frustrated figure as he saw his side lose to England in the semi finals. Rohit, was reduced to tears as India failed to qualify for the finals despite 4 of the 5 Super 12 games. This was yet another instance of India falling at the Semi Final hurdle.

BCCI set to make changes?

According to BCCI sources while speaking to Insidesport.in, there is a chance that Rohit Sharma could be phased out of the T20I set up. The Indian selectors are looking to make the change post the T20I series in New Zealand.

Hardik Pandya has been named the captain of the side which is set to play 3 T20 matches in New Zealand starting November 18th. The team will see the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli rested as they will make a comeback for the Bangladesh series.

BCCI sources have their say –

A source in the know of what is set to happen told Insidesport . in, “of course some tough calls have to be made. It’s a bitter pill to swallow. We had preparations, sent the team early. Yes, two crucial injuries derailed our plans a bit. But that’s the nature of the game. If you see, England are also with Jofra Archer and Mark Wood. But they didn’t struggle today. As for captaincy, it’s a matter of discussion. We will sit after the NZ series”

Pandya set for full time role?

Before the start of the T20I world Cup there were murmurs that the BCCI might ask some seniors to step back from T20I cricket. The names of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja were discussed.

Hardik Pandya led his side Gujarat Titans to the IPL title this year and also led the Indian side to win in Ireland. It is likely that Pandya will be given a full time role in the Indian T20I set up as the captain, with plans to phase out Rohit looming large.

The BCCI source further said ‘’Rohit will be rotated and rested for big series and ICC tournaments. But one cannot rotate a captain too many times. Since, T20’s will not be in focus. We have to phase out Rohit Gradually when someone like Hardik is ready to take the charge full time”
