July 1, 2022 is a special day for India and one man in particular as Jasprit Bumrah becomes the 36th test captain for India. The move comes after Rohit Sharma was ruled out of the game due to COVID-19. Bumrah also becomes the 1st fast bowling skipper for 35 years after the great Kapil Dev. It is a sharp rise in fortunes for the 28 year old who made his debut just four years ago. The accolade also shows how much Bumrah has grown as a test player after being considered a white ball specialist.

Sanjana Ganesan is a sports presenter of repute who got married to Jasprit Bumrah early 2021. Ganesan revealed the reaction the news, specially from Bumrah’s mother. Ganesan said “Shes’s very excited. She always liked to see him do well because he loves the sport, and she’s seen the entire journey he’s gone through to get to where he is. She was ecstatic when she found out”.
Bumrah’s mother cricket and a coack?
The comments from Sanjana Ganesan were made to the official ICC channels ahead of the 5th and final test at Birmingham. Bumrah will lead the side with a 2-1 lead which India had last year. The final test was supposed to be played in Manchester, but a spate of COVID cases put paid to the hopes. Bumrah though has a coach at home and that’s his cricket fanatic mother. Mrs. Bumrah while speaking to ICC said “She had tons of tips and tricks, even though she never played cricket herself! As a mother does, she told him ’this should be how you think, and this is what you should do. It was very nice to see, and she was very happy and proud of him”.

During the pre game press conference, Bumrah looked at ease and spoke about how he looked up to Dhoni, Kohli and Rohit as the captains. The 28 year old said how much the team will miss Rohit at the top as the opener and the skipper. it was his wife who revealed how Bumrah reacted to the news . Sanjana Ganesan said “ (Bumrah) got a lot of time to absorb and understand that this was happening. He’s proud and very happy about it. I don’t know if there are a few nerves, but he’s had enough time to absorb it all”
India and England played the fifth and final test at Birmingham starting on Friday. Bumrah played a huge role in the 4th test win at Oval last year, claiming the key wickets of Pope and Bairstow in one spell. England are on a roll with a 3-0 series whitewash against defending WTC champs, New Zealand. The combine of Stokes and McCullum have bought a new aggressive outlook to the game and England are now a serious threat in the red ball format of the game as well.
