Cricket heritage is very rare and there is always an air of excitement when son/daughter of a legend makes his/her mark. The latest in line is Tagenarine Chanderpaul the son of West Indian legend Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
Tagenarine has been called on to play for the West Indian team for the two match tour of Australia. The Caribbeans will play 2 tests during the tour of Down Under. The 1st game will be played at Perth starting on 30th November. The 2nd game will be played at Adelaide which will be a Day and Night encounter staring 8th December.
Making an impression right from the start –
Tagenarine Chanderpaul played his first game down under during the 3 day game against New South Wales and ACT team combine. Opening the batting in the 2nd dig, Chanderpaul scored 4 runs off 3 balls before being dismissed by Peter Francis.
In the 2nd four day game against Prime Minister XI, Chanderpaul Jr scored 119 off 293 balls in the 1st innings. His innings had 13 fours and a six, while in the 2nd innings Tagenarine scored 56 off 138 balls with 5 fours and a six, while being asked to chase 309 to win.
Netizens left stunned with the similarity between the father and son –
If one thought, Tagenarine would be a different player to his father, then you would be in for a surprise. Just like his father, Tagenarine is also a left hander and has the same crab stance like his father. He also uses the bail, to mark his guard.
Cricket Australia’s official twitter handle put up a video of the father and son combine playing the cover drive and the sweep shots. The fans watching the video couldn’t believe the uncanny similarity the two share even in the stroke play.
Tagenarine’s numbers so far –
Born on 31st May, 1996, Tagenarine made his debut for Guyana in 2013 as an 18 year old. So far he has played 50 domestic games and scored under 2700 runs with 5 centuries and 10 half centuries with an average of 34 and a best of 184.
He has also played 19 List A games scoring 551 runs with a best of 64 which is one of the 2 half centuries he has scored with an average of 29. Suffice to say he is a long format player.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul a true legend –
Known as one of the best batter of his era from the Caribbean Island not named Brian Lara. The left handed batter made his debut for West Indies in 1994 against England before playing against the same opposition in his final test more than 21 years later.
Shivnarine played 164 test scoring 11867 runs with an average of 51.3, with 30 centuries and 66 fifties. He also played 268 ODI games scoring 8778 runs with a best of 150 and had 11 centuries and 59 half centuries with an average of 41.6. in the T20 format he played 22 games scoring 343 runs with a strike rate of 98. He also played for RCB in the inaugural season of IPL.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul was also a useful leg spinner picking 9 test wickets and 14 ODI wickets. He had 60 first class wickets and 56 List A wickets and was also an electric fielder in the in and outfield taking 66 catches in test cricket and 73 in ODI cricket.
