j

It was a fabulous day of test cricket for India on a batting friendly pitch at the Edgbaston cricket ground at Birmingham. India came in to the game with the series reading 2-1 in favor of the Indian team. Indian team had lost their skipper Rohit Sharma ahead of the game after he had tested positive for COVID. Bumrah was named the captain for the test match as he became the 36th Test Skipper for India. England skipper Ben Stokes won the toss and chose to bowl first on what was an overcast start to the day.

The story as it happened –

India’s tour of England in 2021 was a five match affair with the matches held in Nottingham, Lord’s. Leeds, Oval and Manchester. The final match was postponed, the talking point through the series was the pitch intrusion. Man named Jarvo was constantly seen wearing the Indian jersey to encroach onto then field, making him a crowd hero.

Yet another intrusion happens –

The first day’s play saw yet another pitch intrusion incident, when a man from the crowd shot the entire incident. A fan was seen wearing the Indian jersey as he could be seen being escorted out of the ground by security personnel, much to the amusement of the English crowd.

England have the Indian team on the mat –

In the absence of Rohit, the Indian team opened with Gill and Pujara. The youngster from Punjab played some crisp drives before falling for 17. Pujara on his comeback did not impress much scoring mere 13. Vihari was the 3rd wicket to fall LBW for 6, while Kohli was bowled by Potts for 11. Iyer came out with a plan to attack but his innings was cut short by Anderson who had caught down the leg side

Pant and Jadeja combine for a quickfire 222 run stand –

At 98 for 5, India were in trouble but what happened the next 3 hours was nothing short of magical. Pant cut lose and played every shot in the book and scored his 5th test 100 off just 89 balls. Pant was in his elements as he cut, pulled and drove and played some really outrageous shots. He was dismissed by Root for 146 off 111 balls with 18 fours and 3 sixes. The stand was worth 222 runs as India scored at nearly 5 runs per over.

Jadeja stays unbeaten as India end the day at 338 for 7 –

Post the fall of Pant, India lost Thakur quickly caught by Billings off Stokes, Jadeja though kept going as he scored his 18th test 50. At the end of play, India were 338 for 7 with Jadeja on 83 and Shami yet to open his account.
