Australia and West Indies began the Two match test series with the first match being played at Perth. The crowd who were visibly absent for the ODI series against England made their way back to Perth Stadium to cheer on for their Baggy Greens.

This series holds relevance for Australia as this will solidify their push for a place in the finals of the World Test Championships. For the West Indian team this is a chance for the young members of the team to step and make a name for themselves.

The story as it happened –

Australia won the toss and chose to bat first and make use of the historical advantage. Both the tests at this new Perth Stadium has helped teams win the game after winning the toss and batting 1st. West Indies gave Tagenarine Chanderpaul the test cap as the son of former legend Shivnarine Chanderpaul took his first steps for his national side.

Labuschagne’s cover drive leaves Joshua Da Silva stunned –

Marnus Labuschagne has been one of Australia’s consistent run scorers in test cricket. The 28 year old showed of his good form with the bat during the 1st day’s play at Perth. There was a moment where Joshua Da Silva and Labuschagne were involved in a fair bit of banter.

Roston Chase enticed the Australian number to come down the track by bowling one floaty ball outside off stump. Labuschagne obliged and played a crispy cover drive that left everyone stunned as Joshua Da Silva was heard muttering “Oh my goodness that’s a very good shot”

Australia end the day at 293/2

Australia lost the wicket of David Warner for five when he dragged the ball back onto his stumps with the score reading 9. From there Labuschagne joined Usman Khwaja and added 142 runs for the 2nd wicket stand. Khawaja scored his 18th test half century before falling to Mayers for 65 caught behind by Joshua Da Silva.

Smith then joined Labuschagne to add 128 unbeaten stand for the 4th wicket as Smith scored his 37th test fifty. Smith was not out on 59 off 107 balls with 7 hits to the fence. The day though belonged to 28 year old Marnus Labuschagne who scored his 8th test ton. The right hander ended the day on 154 not out from 270 balls with 16 fours and a six, As Australia scored 293/2 from their 90 overs of play.
