Sri Lanka have a huge pedigree in the shortest format of the game. The Lankans have won the T20 World Cup in 2014 and have twice been runners up. The recently concluded 2022 Asia Cup was also played in the T20 format. Sri Lanka won the title for the 6th time by beating Pakistan in the final at Dubai. Sri Lanka, came into the world cup as one of the massive dark-horses.

The story so far –

Sunday 16th October wasn’t a day many Pakistani fans will want to remember for a long time. The 2022 T20 World Cup began with the qualifiers as Sri Lanka and Namibia locked horns. Chasing 164 to win, the Lankans were bowled out for 108 to hand them a 55-run loss.

Pathum Nissanka literally invents a new shot –

24 year old opening batter from Sri Lanka, Pathum Nissanka has a lot of talent and is hailed as a good player. The young opener scored 74 off 60 balls against UAE to help his side reach 152 on the board.

The shot of the day came in the 1st ball off the 18th over, as Zahoor Khan bowled a slow ball way outside off. Nissanka followed the ball and played a ungainly looking shot and fell over in the process. Nissanka got 4 runs for his efforts but also lost his shoe in the process to even leave the commentators laughing.

Kartik Meiyappan takes an hattrick –

The star of the UAE bowling was 22 year old right arm leg spinner, Kartik Meiyappan. The leggie picked up the 1st hattrick of the 2022 T20 World Cup and ended with 3/19 from his 4 overs. Meiyappan first dismissed Rajapaksa for 5 by Basil Hameed. The next to go was Charith Asalanka caught by Aravind for a duck.

The hattrick arrived when Shanaka was bowled first ball to spark epic celebrations from the UAE players. From 117/2 the Lankans found themselves at 117/5 with 5 overs left in the bank.

Pathum Nissanka stars with the bat –

Nissanka and Kusal Mendis opened the innings for Sri Lanka and added 42 for the first wicket. Mendis was out for 13 ball 18 as Dhananjaya De Silva came into bat at number 3. DDS and Nissanka then added 50 runs with De Silva being the aggressor. De Silva scored 21 ball 33 before he fell to a run out.
