Mumbai Indians on Wednesday night flexed their muscles to beat Lucknow Super Giants by 82 runs. The game was the first eliminator for TATA Indian Premier League 2023. The match was played at the MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai which is also called the Chepauk. With this win now Mumbai Indians will play defending champions Gujarat Titans in a virtual semi finals. The game is to be played on Friday 26th at Ahmedabad to meet Chennai Super Kings in the final game of the season on Sunday.

The story as it happened –

Rohit Sharma decided to bat after winning the toss. The decision was to make best use of the conditions as chasing was harder on the track. Hrithik Shokeen came in for left spinner Kumar Kartikeya, while Quinton De Kock was benched by Lucknow in what was a shocking move.

Hooda and Stoinis involved in a crazy mix up –

The last time Lucknow and Mumbai faced off each other was on May 16th at the Ekana stadium. The home team Lucknow had held on to a 5 run win in a thrilling game to keep their unbeaten run against Mumbai going. The hero of that game was Marcus Stoinis.

The Australian was yet again proving to be a thorn in the flesh of the Mumbai team. Stoinis played the ball to the leg side and immediately set off for two runs. That’s when Hooda and Stoinis collided in the middle of the pitch as Ishan Kishan threw down the stumps. Stoinis had his hands on his head as he was run out for 40.

Aakash Madhwal the hero for Mumbai –

Like every season, TATA IPL found a new unsung hero and this time it was Aakash Madhwal. The 29 year old from Uttarakhand was a late replacement player for Mumbai last year. This year he took the death bowling role and has proved to be a good replacement for Bumrah and Archer.

The 29 year old bowled with control and swing and used his variations to good effect. Madhwal began with the wicket of Mankad before dismissing Badoni and Pooran off back to back balls. Ravi Bishnoi became his 4th wicket caught by Jordan before castling Mohsin Khan to claim his 5th. The figures of 5/5 were the joint most economical in the history of IPL as Madhwal became the 1st bowler to pick 5 wickets in a play off game.

Twitter reacts –

Cricket fans took to Twitter to have their say on the wicket of Stoinis. Many fans were angry at Deepak Hooda and you can read all the reactions below.
