All India Selection Committee met on Wednesday and decided to name 5 time IPL winning captain Rohit Sharma as their white ball Captain, ending tenure of the most successful ODI captain Virat Kohli. Sources also stated that selection committee gave Kohli 48 hours to announce himself but he was not convinced with the decision leading to announce Rohit Sharma as new ODI captain.
In September, some months before T20 World Cup, Kohli announced he will be stepping down as T20 captain after this tournament. India even failed to enter semi finals following losses by Pakistan and New Zealand in group stages. Kohli stated that he want to manage his work load and is fully fit to lead ODI and Test teams, he wrote in his Instagram post on 16 September.
Rohit began His Full time T20I captaincy against New Zealand just few days after T20 World Cup and ended victories 3-0 in three match series.
HOW ROHIT REPLACED VIRAT AS FULL TIME ODI CAPTAIN
A senior BCCI official informed that they wanted clarity between white ball and red ball. They wanted complete separation in longest and shortest forms to avoid any confusion and chaos. In the end it was left to selectors to announce Rohit as new ODI captain.
World Cup 2023 to be hosted by India Virat never wanted to give up ODI captaincy, but BCCI wanted change in leadership group. It has also been learnt that kohli was not informed about the decision beforehand. At time he relinquished his t20 captaincy this was expected to happen anytime soon.
While taking this decision, BCCI was divided into two groups. One group believed, with no T20I in South Africa tour, there is no need change ODI captaincy. On the other hand Dominating group believed if we have to take decision in future then why not now. And Rohit should get enough time to create his team for upcoming ODI World Cup.
At the end BCCI on Wednesday decided to announce Rohit Sharma as their new white ball captain.
