Australia dominated the first day of play in the World Test Championships final which began on Wednesday. It was an amazing show with the bat by Travis Head who took to the attack to the Indian bowlers. Steve Smith on the other hand played the perfect foil as he blunted the bowling in his own way. Australia ended the first day at 325/2 after playing 85 overs with Steve Smith 5 runs away from his 31st test ton.
The story so far –
After the early wickets of Usman Khawaja and David Warner in the 1st session before Lunch, the Indian bowlers had no joy coming their way. The sunny and bright day at Oval saw the Australians run riot with the bat against a tired and frustrated Indian bowling unit.
Mohammad Siraj gets angry at Steve Smith –
There was action seen right from the start as Australia resumed batting on the 2nd day. Mohammad Siraj was the bowler to watch out for after his Impressive performances on the 1st day. The 29 year old pacer lost his cool at Steve Smith after the Australia pulled out at the last moment. The reason for the late pull out was a bird suddenly flying within the eye sight of the batter. Siraj wasn’t pleased as he threw the ball in his follow through leave Steve Smith stunned.
Classy century by Smith –
Starting the day at 95, Steve Smith was the man on whom the focus was. The 34 year old got two half volleys on his pads by Siraj. Both the times the ball was hit to the boundary for four as Smith moved from 95 to 103 in a span of 2 balls. This was the 31st test ton for the Australian vice captain in a ground where he averages close to 100.
Indian bowlers strike back –
Travis Head was having issues with the short balls bowled into his body. This was ploy worked finally when Siraj had Head caught off short ball to give Bharat his 3rd catch. Head scored 163 off 174 balls with 25 fours and a six. Cameron Green walked to the wicket in a bid to push the scoring rate. Shami had Green chasing a wide ball only to be caught by Gill for six. Somebody needs to tell Siraj the tale of the shepherd. If he continues to show this fake aggression on every ball, there will be soon a moment where he will not be taken seriously. Best players know the use of aggression.
