Barbados was the venue for the 1st ODI between India and West Indies. It has been a miserable few weeks for the men in maroon. The two time ODI world cup winner failed to qualify for the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup to be held in India for the first time in their history. India, on the other hand are coming into the series in a bid to prepare for the ODI world cup. Rohit Sharma had led his team to a win in the 2 match test series with a 1-0 margin.

The story as it happened –

Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to bowl first as he wanted to make use of the early help for the pacers. Barbados has recently seen low scoring games with the pace bowlers getting a lot of help. A week after making his test debut, 29 year old Mukesh Kumar became the latest entrant to get the ODI cap for his nation.

Mukesh Kumar makes an instant impact –

Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma, threw the ball to Hardik Pandya and Mukesh Kumar to start the proceedings. Allick Athanaze who had impressed during the test series was showing his full stroke play when he scored 22 off 17 balls with 3 fours and a six. That’s when the left handed batter went after a wide delivery from Kumar. Ravindra Jadeja who was fielding at point jumped to take a stunning catch to dismiss the young West Indian to give Mukesh Kumar his 1st ODI wicket.


No Sanju Samson as Ishan Kishan keeps wickets for India –

India decided to go in with Ishan Kishan as the specialist wicket keeper in a move keeping in mind the ODI world cup. Sanju Samson who was one of the best ODI players for India in 2022 was made to sit out as he continues to wait for his chance. Umran Malik was also part of the XI after last playing for India earlier this year in the home season before enduring a poor season of IPL for the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise.
