Monday was a huge day for the Women’s Premier League 2023 season. It was the day that national team mates Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana came face to face. Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore locked horns in the 4th game of the tournament at the Brabourne stadium in Mumbai.

The story as it happened –

Both the teams came into the game with contrasting fortunes. Mumbai had won their first game by beating Gujarat Giants in the opening clash. Bangalore though had lost their opening game on Sunday to Delhi Capitals by 60 runs. Smriti Mandhana won the toss for Royal Challengers Bangalore and chose to bat first.

Harmanpreet Kaur seen celebrating the wicket of Mandhana –

Royal Challengers Bangalore’s captain Smriti Mandhana gave her side yet another good start. The left handed batter had scored 23 off 16 balls with 5 glorious boundaries. Mandhana gave West Indian bowler Hayley Matthews the charge, and couldn’t time the ball well.

Mandhana gave an easy catch to Issy Wong after the ball caught the thick edge. The cameras then panned to Harmanpreet Kaur who was seen celebrating wildly along with her teammates and the huge Mumbai Indians fanbase. From 39/0 the RCB women’s team had managed to slide to 43/3.

Decent contributions with the bat helps RCB reach 155 –

Captain Smriti Mandhana opened with the batting with Sophie Devine and the pair put on 39 for the 1st wicket. Devine fell for 16 after she was caught by Amanjot Kaur off Saika Ishaque. 2 balls later the 27 year old left arm spinner struck again having disturbed the stumps of Disha Kasat for a duck.

After the fall of Mandhana, Bangalore lost the wicket of Heather Knight for a 1st ball duck. Richa Ghosh with 28 and Kanika with 22, alongwith 23 by Shreyanka Patil and 20 by Megan Schutt helped Royal Challengers Bangalore reach 155. For Mumbai Indians, Hayley Matthews picked 3 wickets, as Saika Ishaque and Amelia Kerr picking 2 wickets each.

Mumbai stomp home to an easy win –

Chasing 156 to win, the Mumbai Indians batters did not seem to be bothered by the bowling of Royal Challengers Bangalore. Hayley Matthews was the star of the show with the bat. The West Indian struck an unbeaten 77 off 38 balls with 13 fours and a six in her innings.

Yastika Bhatia scored 23 before becoming the only wicket to fall. Nat Sciver Brunt then joined Matthews and scored 55 not out from 29 balls with 9 fours and a six. Mumbai Indians won the game by 9 wickets with 34 balls to spare. As Brunt and Matthews saw home the win with an un broken stand of 114 runs for the 2nd wicket.
